If you know anybody that can't read, then reach your hand out and help them learn.
My name is Rubert and I'm in my fifties now.
In my teenage days, when I went to high school, I would sit at the back of the classroom hoping that the teacher didn't see me. My point is that I didn’t know how to read. I started to learn how to read in my late forties and I am still learning.
Remember it's never too late to learn -- I'm doing it!
How I came up with the name “Rubert's Leap In Reading”:
One day I was with my tutor working on two and three letter words, when she took the word “can” and added an (e) at the end of the word, and so the (a) changed from a short sound to a long sound. It was a big leap in my reading and that's how I came up with the name “Rubert’s Leap In Reading”.
I remember sitting in my English class in high school. The teacher would come in and tell all the students to copy down the stuff that was on the chalkboard and then leave. The teacher would come back at the end of the period and tell us to go to our next class. Then at the end of the week the teacher would give us a test on what was written down on the chalkboard. Because the teacher was gone most of the time I wouldn’t write anything down. I failed English class. Whom do I blame?
